LOCA FARMS

We have decided to add bees to our property.  I am going to start building two top bar hives this month so I can have them ready for some bees in April.  I am going to purchase to packages of Italian bees as I heard they are moe gentle.  I was inspired by Phil Chandler and Les Crowder's top bar designs.  I will make one of each of theirs as they are slightly different from each other and then study them both for first hand comparison.  I liked the idea that this type from what I have read is more conducisve to the bees natural environment.  There is less honey production but since we are only doing this for ourselves then that really is not an issue for us.  I may decide later to build the Langstroth hive which is much more common to also study first hand how the bees live in each of the units.  I myself prefer whatever keeps the bees happiest and healthiest...
